50+ Social News Websites: Notes about this list

I spent some time going through hundreds of social news sites and came up with a list of sites which I think are worth exploring. Each site on this list is evaluated according to various criteria, including the no. of votes for each story and the frequency/date of submissions, all of which are indicators of user/viewer activity.

This list is not meant to be comprehensive. It doesn’t include every social news website out there but only the ones which I think has potential for providing you with relevant/fresh news while giving exposure to your ideas, brand or website.

Some of the sites on this list have a broad topical focus while others are created to cater to a specific niche. I’ve divided the list into two portions: General Social News or websites which cover a wide variety of news and Niche Social News which refers to specialized sites that only focus on a limited range of niche topics.

This list purely consists of English social news sites. There are no social bookmarking or social network sites included. I’ve not included video sharing sites because I’ll be writing more on them and video marketing in a future article.

Here’s a brief definition of social news sites, in case you’re unfamiliar with them:

Social News websites are communities which allow its users to submit news stories, articles and media (videos/pictures) and share them with other users or the general public. Some of these articles will be given more visibility, depending on various factors such as the number of user votes for each item.
Apart from counting registered user votes, some social news websites employ human editors to determine the visibility of each news item. Certain stories will be removed from the website while others may be given a ‘featured‘ position if the story is highly relevant and news worthy.

General Social News Websites

1. Reddit: Popular social news website with a large user base. Covers a wide range of news. Includes several topical sections called subreddits, which focus on specific topics like programming, science, politics and business.

2. Digg: The largest and most popular social news website on the internet. Covers all topics including politics, entertainment, technology and general news. Includes a separate video and image section.

3. Propeller: A social news site that covers all topics from technology to politics and entertainment. Operates in a similar fashion to Digg.

4. Fark: A community news site which allows users to comment on news articles. User submitted links will be posted on the main page once they are approved by the administrators.

5. Slashdot: Primarily a tech news site, Slashdot also covers topics like books, games, politics and entertainment. Users can submit stories and they may be published after editors approve it. A popular site that can send a large amount of traffic.

6. Metafilter: A community weblog which allows users to share links and discuss interesting websites/topics. Moderation is done through editors as well as peer pressure in order to prevent gaming.

7. I am bored: Covers general topics with a strong focus on weird and offbeat news. You can submit a link which may be posted after the editors approve it.

8. Mixx: A general social news sites which has a category for all types of news. Topics covered include business, entertainment, sports, health and tech. Includes the ability to create groups to share news with other users.

9. Shoutwire: General news site that is well populated with a loyal group of users. Topics covered include technology, politics, entertainment, lifestyle and sports.

10. Newsvine: A website consisting of community-driven news stories and opinions. Users have their own blogs and can write articles, save links to external content and vote/comment on other user stories.

11. IndianPad: A general social news site that with a large indian userbase. Topics covered include entertainment, sports, videos and tamil news.

12. Linkfilter: Covers all sorts of news. All links are posted and moderated by users. Links can be ranked on several levels: clicks, votes, age, or a combination of all three called points.

13. NewsCloud: A general social site with a focus on news in all topics. Similar to Newsvine, each user has their own blogs and can publish content to be voted up by other users.

14. Hugg: Hugg is a social news site with a strong focus on environmental issues. Also includes other categories like politics, science, fashion and technology.

15. Plime: A general news site which features a wide variety of topics ranging from religion and sports to technology or business. Odd news performs best in this community.

16. C2NN: An active social news site with a variety of topics including environment issues, business, politics, animals and offbeat. Similar to Hugg in focus but much more populated and active.

17. Kirsty: A general news site with a focus on fashion, entertainment and design on top of other topics like technology and food. Has a strong female user base.

18. Nowpublic: A participatory news network which focuses on citizen journalism. Each user has their own individual profile blog/page and can upload videos, images and news stories.

19. Stirrdup: General social news site with four broad categories: politics, technology, news and entertainment.

20. Searchles: A hybrid social news sites which covers all topics. Includes a video section and offers personalized filtering features and the option of joining groups made up of other users with similar interests.

21. Linkinn: A social news site that specializes in pictures and video. Covers a broad range of topics, particular offbeat and weird content.

22. Earthfrisk: Covers topics like humor, politics, entertainment and business. Combines a social network and group features with digg-style news voting.

23. Truemors: A social rumor news site which focuses on the publication of “true rumors that are relevant, informative, and interesting.” Users can post links anonymously via text, voicemail, web or email. Editors moderate content.

24. StumbleUpon: A social network and browser toolbar which allows users to channel surf the internet. Technically not 100% a social news site, although users can submit webpages to be rated by other users. Here is a guide to StumbleUpon.

25. Linkswarm: Covers a wide range of topics from celebrity gossip to funny media, science and politics. Focuses on pop culture and bizarre news as well.

Niche Social News Websites

Here are social websites which focus on a specific niche. For best results, only submit to them when your site falls within the same niche or covers the same topics. Or else you’re likely to be marked as spam.

26. Sphinn: Sphinn is a social site for search and interactive marketers. It’s designed to allow you to share and discover news stories, read and take part in discussions, discover events of interest and network with others.

27. Dzone: DZone is a free link-sharing community for developers. Other topics commonly featured include web design and programming.

28. Tweako: A user-powered site and social network with a focus on guides and tutorials in all categories like computing, technology, and the Internet.

29. Autospies: A social site that focuses on automotive news, car reviews, auto show photos and videos.

30. Design Float: A social news site for design-related content. Topics covered include business, freelancing, advertising, digital art and branding.

31. Ball Hype: A site that aggregates content from thousands of sports blogs. Users can submit stories and votes will determine if they make it to home page.

32. YCombinator Hacker News: A news site that focuses on technology, startups, business and entrepreneurship.

33. SWiK: A community driven resource for people who use open source software.

34. Buzzflash: A user driven progressive political news website that allows you to submit political stories.

35. DNHour: DNHour.com is a user-powered news portal built specially for the domain name industry. Most members are generally from the domain name industry, which includes domain name owners, companies or professionals.

36. PlugIM: PlugIM is a user driven internet marketing community. Topics covered include search engine optimization, products, business and marketing.

37.Showhype: Operates in a similar way to Ballhype. Stories come from two sources — users and aggregated content. Users can also submit a link to a story that they’ve found or write their own article on ShowHype.

38. Small Business Brief: A niche social site which focuses on small business news. Topics covered include marketing and sales, website development, management and entrepreneurship.

39. Hypediss: Social news site with a focus on design, fashion, urban culture and art.

40. Chictini: Product-oriented social site which a focus on new trends and styles. It’s possible to submit news stories although most of the submissions feature products from online retailers.

41. DotNetKicks: DotNetKicks.com is a community based news site that focuses on topics like NET development techniques, technologies and tools including ASP.NET, C#, VB.NET, C++ and Visual Studio.

42. Lipstick: Reddit-style social news site for celebrity gossip.

43. Hubspot: Social news site for marketers, entrepreneurs and business professionals.

44. Winelifetoday: A niche social site for wine lovers. Topics covered included news and opinion articles to do with wine.

45. iliketotallyloveit.com: Allows users to publish and share products with the broader public which they find cool, innovative, exceptionally beautiful, or just weird. Included with every item is a link to an online shop where it can be purchased.

46. Wordsy: A niche social news site for people who love reading and books. Topics covered include small presses, fiction writing, authors, book awards and poetry. (Note: Wordsy has suspended its site since Dec 2008)

47. Value Investing News: A niche social news site that covers stocks and investment news. A small but active community.

48. Teenwag: Focus on celebrity gossip. A hybrid social network with digg-style voting. Users can submit links to be voted up by other users.

49. Muti: Muti is a social bookmarking site inspired by reddit and Digg but dedicated to content of interest to Africans or those interested in Africa.

50. Tip’d: A social media site for finance, investing, and business topics. Tip’d users vote on stories they like by clicking the ‘Tip it’ button that appears next to each story, and then can comment by pressing the ‘Discuss’ link below the story.

This list is a work in progress. I’ll be updating it with new sites over time and I plan to include my own opinions of each site when I have the time. Right now, I’ve only written a very brief description of each site along with their niche focus. Know any quality site that should be included?

How to Crack WEP passwords using back trac

You already know that if you want to lock down your Wi-Fi network, you should opt for WPA encryption because WEP is easy to crack. But did you know how easy? Take a look.

Today we're going to run down, step-by-step, how to crack a Wi-Fi network with WEP security turned on. But first, a word: Knowledge is power, but power doesn't mean you should be a jerk, or do anything illegal. Knowing how to pick a lock doesn't make you a thief. Consider this post educational, or a proof-of-concept intellectual exercise.

Dozens of tutorials on how to crack WEP are already all over the internet using this method. Seriously—Google it. This ain't what you'd call "news." But what is surprising is that someone like me, with minimal networking experience, can get this done with free software and a cheap Wi-Fi adapter. Here's how it goes.

Unless you're a computer security and networking ninja, chances are you don't have all the tools on hand to get this job done. Here's what you'll need:

A compatible wireless adapter—This is the biggest requirement. You'll need a wireless adapter that's capable of packet injection, and chances are the one in your computer is not. After consulting with my friendly neighborhood security expert, I purchased an Alfa AWUS050NH USB adapter, pictured here, and it set me back about $50 on Amazon. Update: Don't do what I did. Get the Alfa AWUS036H, not the US050NH, instead.The guy in this video below is using a $12 model he bought on Ebay (and is even selling his router of choice). There are plenty of resources on getting aircrack-compatible adapters out there.

A BackTrack 3 Live CD. We already took you on a full screenshot tour of how to install and use BackTrack 3, the Linux Live CD that lets you do all sorts of security testing and tasks. Download yourself a copy of the CD and burn it, or load it up in VMware to get started. (I tried the BackTrack 4 pre-release, and it didn't work as well as BT3. Do yourself a favor and stick with BackTrack 3 for now.)

A nearby WEP-enabled Wi-Fi network. The signal should be strong and ideally people are using it, connecting and disconnecting their devices from it. The more use it gets while you collect the data you need to run your crack, the better your chances of success.

Patience with the command line. This is an ten-step process that requires typing in long, arcane commands and waiting around for your Wi-Fi card to collect data in order to crack the password. Like the doctor said to the short person, be a little patient.

Crack That WEP

To crack WEP, you'll need to launch Konsole, BackTrack's built-in command line. It's right there on the taskbar in the lower left corner, second button to the right. Now, the commands.

First run the following to get a list of your network interfaces: airmon-ng

The only one I've got there is labeled ra0. Yours may be different; take note of the label and write it down. From here on in, substitute it in everywhere a command includes (interface).

Now, run the following four commands. See the output that I got for them in the screenshot below.

airmon-ng stop (interface)
ifconfig (interface) down
macchanger --mac 00:11:22:33:44:55 (interface)
airmon-ng start (interface)

If you don't get the same results from these commands as pictured here, most likely your network adapter won't work with this particular crack. If you do, you've successfully "faked" a new MAC address on your network interface, 00:11:22:33:44:55.

Now it's time to pick your network. Run:airodump-ng (interface)

To see a list of wireless networks around you. When you see the one you want, hit Ctrl+C to stop the list. Highlight the row pertaining to the network of interest, and take note of two things: its BSSID and its channel (in the column labeled CH), as pictured below. Obviously the network you want to crack should have WEP encryption (in the ENC) column, not WPA or anything else.

sites. Some are very simplistic, such as hitting ctl-alt-del

when the password box is displayed, to simply turning off

java capability, which will dump you into t he default page.

You can try manually searching for other directories, by

typing the directory name into the url address box of your

browser, ie: you w ant access to www.target.com . Try typing

www.target.com/images .(almost ever y web site has an images

directory) This will put you into the images directo ry,

and give you a text list of all the images located there.

Often, the t itle of an image will give you a clue to the

name of another directory. ie: in www.target.com/images,

there is a .gif named gamestitle.gif . There is a g ood

chance then, that there is a 'games' directory on the site,

so you wou ld then type in www.target.com/games, and if it is

a valid directory, you aga in get a text listing of all thefiles available there.

For a more automated a pproach, use a program like WEB SNAKE

from anawave, or Web Wacker. These programs will create a

mirror image of an entire web site, showing all director ies,

or even mirror a complete server. They are indispensable for

locating hidden files and directories.

What do you do if you can't get past an openin g "Password

Required" box? First do an WHOIS Lookup for the site. In our

example, www.target.com . We find it's hosted by www.host.com

at 100.100.100. 1. We then go to 100.100.100.1, and then launch \

Web Snake, and mirror the e ntire server. Set Web Snake to NOT

download anything over about 20K. (not ma ny HTML pages are

bigger than this) This speeds things up some, and keeps yo u

from getting a lot of files and images you don't care about.

This can take a long time, so consider running it right before bed time.

Once you have an image of the entire server, you look through

the directories listed, and find /target. When we open that

directory, we find its contents, and all of i ts sub-directories listed.

Let's say we find /target/games/zip/zipindex.html . This would be the index

page that would be displayed had you gone through the

password procedure, and allowed it to redirect you here.

By simply typ ing in the url

www.target.com/games/zip/zipindex.html you will be on

the index page and ready to follow the links for downloading.

5. Modify Parameter in the Program “bluetest.pl” and run the program

6. Bluetest.pl should find the Mobile Devices (Phone, etc) which has Bluetooth enabled

7. Connect to the device Found (in a binding Manner) and start extracting information from device (phone must accept)

8. Reading and Sending SMS (The messages must still need to be converted to appropriate character)

9. Extract Last 5 dial, missed and received calls. (This require more program hacking to be successful)

10. Adding entries into the Phone book and reading the first 5 entries in the phone book (require more program hacking)

11. Making a call from the mobile (can be useful for spying on someone)

PDF viewer and reader that’s better than Foxit viewer

Does anyone still use Adobe Reader? If you do, I feel bad for you! For many months now, I’ve been using the very fast Foxit PDF reader software because it’s only 100 times faster than Adobe Reader! Foxit is a great PDF viewer because it’s not bloated with tons of useless features that no one is ever going to use. Foxit has been a great replacement, but the free version has had some problems that make it slightly annoying to use sometimes.

If you’ve been using Foxit reader for a while, you have probably noticed that it can have some issues when it comes to printing. If you decide to add a sticky note or manually type in text onto a PDF, you get a message stating that an evaluation mark will be placed on the document when you try to print it. You have to purchase the full version if you don’t want to have the marks.

Luckily, there’s another PDF viewer program that I came across called PDF-XChange Viewer that has all of the features and benefits of Foxit, but without any of the restrictions! With this program, you can export text from a PDF document, add content to PDF files, type onto PDF’s, fill and save forms, add sticky notes, and lots more. The best thing is that it’s way faster than Adobe Reader and only a little slower than Foxit. There is a splash screen on this program, but you can disable it from the Preferences.

Another really nice thing about PDF-XChange Viewer is that it has a really nice GUI interface. Foxit looks kind of old (probably why it’s faster), but I found that the nice interface is well worth a half second extra loading time. It also has a grid view whereby you can view all of the open PDF documents in a grid format with thumbnails along with document names.

Some other really nice features of this program are the fact that when you place a sticky note onto a document, you can actually place it over text and the note will become transparent so that you can read the text below the note itself! Also, when you are opening a file, you can see a preview of it to the right of the Open dialog box.

One other feature that I liked about this program is that it has a button whereby you can open the PDF in other PDF reader program directly. So if the PDF-XChange Viewer cannot load the PDF document correctly, you can open it from the other PDF viewers you have installed. Pretty cool.

Finally, PDF-XChange Viewer took a really nice feature from Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox whereby each PDF document that is currently open has it’s own tab at the top left. You can switch between documents by clicking on the different tabs! Nice!

Overall, it’s a great PDF Viewer and has been working well in my tests. I’ve had an issue with the text not showing up correctly in the Sticky Note for some reason. Using PDF files in today’s business world is commonplace. Many different types of information is exchanged using PDF files types. Simply creating basic PDF documents is easy enough. There are a handful of free to use software packagesgiving end users the ability to create PDF file documents.

One of the drawbacks to some of the free software options is the ability to encrypt or password protect the PDF output. When trading documentation containing items such as intellectual property data, engineering schematics, or other sensitive corporate information, being able to safeguard files becomes a priority. Unfortunately, there are quite a few people who swear by Adobe Acrobat as the only solution for this type of need. Fortunately, Adobe is not the only company to have a PDF creation tool, which can digitally protect a document.

NovaPDF Professional (found here) does an excellent job of creating PDF files, and offers the option of encrypting PDF output. It has a very small footprint on your computer, and offers a wealth of choices when creating a PDF file. When installed, it simply creates an additional printer type object within the Windows Printers and Faxes group.

Just like other PDF software products, you access NovaPDF when you are going to print a document. Once you reach the standard printer options screen, you can select NovaPDF from the printer selection drop-down box. Now you may click on the Properties button on the right-hand side of the screen to access the features of NovaPDF.

Once you are in the Properties area, you will note the wide variety of tabs. The first tab, Page, gives the user the option of changing the print size (default is Letter), measurement units, orientation, and resolution. All of the page options are fairly straightforward. If your document contains images, you may want to look at the Graphics tab. This tab offers the options to compress images, convert pictures to grayscale, and downsample (resize resolution) images; all in an effort to reduce the overall document size.

Working with graphics is an expectation of most people who create original PDF documentation. At the very least, the PDF output file should be able to reproduce the images in a viewable format, and NovaPDF has that covered. In addition to graphics, should you choose to embed the fonts you are working with, there is a menu tab specifically for that option. Embedding fonts will help the recipients of the PDF file see the text data as the author intended.

Sometimes, a person needs to add a watermark (such as Confidential, For BusinessUse Only, etc.) into a PDF document. NovaPDF’s watermark tab accomplishes this in short order. Simply click on New Text, to add wording as a watermark; or click on New Image to browse for a image. You also are given the ability to add multiple watermarks, should you have the need.

Do you intend to send the PDF in an email after creating it? Why not pre-assign this task from within NovaPDF’s Properties? Clicking on the Email tab gives a person the option of Sending via email, as a PDF attachment, and sending as a ZIP attachment. You can also let NovaPDF know to open your email client, send through your email client, or use a pre-configured SMTP platform.

Now to the security section of this program, located under the Security tab. For the encryption portion of NovaPDF, you have three options: None, 40-bit, or 128-bit. The difference between 40 and 128 bit is what the reader of the PDF file can, and cannot do with the document. At 40-bit encryption, you can allow, or not allow, them to print, change the PDF contents, or even extract text and images. The 128-bit encryption offers high level options akin to the 40-bit level as well as restriction high resolution print capabilities.

At the bottom of the Security tab, you have the option of adding passwords to the document. Doing so will not allow anyone to view the document without knowing the password. The passwords are broken up into two categories, user and owner. The user password allows viewing, and rudimentary tasks; where the owner password allows for editing type functionality.

When you have checked off all of the options for this document that you desire, you are ready to print. Click on Ok at the bottom of any of the tab screens to get back to the default Windows print menu. After clicking on Print, you are greeted with another short list of choices.

Here you may append the information to another PDF file, or insert the information into another PDF files, but before the other document’s contents. You can also choose to send the output file via email, open it in your PDF viewer, or both. Should you be required to use the PDF/A-1b format, you can check its box prior to printing.

With the ability to compress images and encrypt data, NovaPDF is a good choice when it comes to PDF files.

I learned this a decade ago when I was ripping VCDs, I think it is still true for DVDs as I have experienced with ImTOO and other ripping tools like Nero Recode.

How to Convert videos into iPhone format

So I’ve been using my iPhone a lot these days and one thing that is a must for me is to sync up all my movies, TV shows, and videos onto my phone so that I can watch them on the go, rather than streaming the videos to my xBox.

Though it’s great for watching stuff at home on my TV, it sucks that I cannot carry around my movies wherever I go! But alas, there are many tools out there that let you convert your videos into the proper iPhone format.

HandBrake is a free and very nice tool to convert most video formats, including AVI, MKV and more into the required MP4 or M4V formats that the iPhone supports.

So how do you use this program? For newbies, it can look a bit intimidating, but it’s really pretty straightforward once you do it a few times.

First, open the program and click the Source button at the top left and then chooseVideo File or DVD/Video_TS Folder if you want to convert an already ripped DVD into the iPhone format.

Select the video file and the path will populate into the Source text box. Now you need to click on the Browse button next in the Destination section. Choose your output path and type a name for the converted file, then click Save. Don’t worry about the file type at this point.

By default, the preset is set to Basic. Now click on the iPhone & iPod Touch preset in the right hand column. Once you do this, the file extension will change to m4v.

At the bottom, you’ll see a bunch of tabs where you can further customize the settings for the output video. For me, I’ve never had to change anything there, but if you want to, you can.

Now to convert your video, just click on the Add to Queue button and a new window will pop up with the summary in a list format. If you have a bunch of videos to convert at once, just go back to the main screen and repeat all the steps again like choosing Source, etc.

Click Add to Queue again and the second video will be added to the queue list and so on. Just remember to change the name of the output file since that does not happen automatically!

Finally, click on the green arrow Encode button and that’s it! A few commandwindows will pop up and all that, but after a little while, your newly converted video will be ready to sync onto your iPhone! Depending on the size, it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours to convert a video. Enjoy!

The program will read the DVD and display the title and chapter information. You can choose which titles you want to convert. This is good because you can uncheck all of the really short chapters, which are probably previews or interviews, etc.

Next, you want to choose the “Profile” or what you want the DVD to be converted into. You can also choose the zoom options: Keep Aspect, Medium, Letterbox, and Pan and Scan. Type in a name for your file and if you want to split the files, you can choose from 650 MB, 700 MB, 800 MB CD, 4.7 GB DVD, or a custom size.

Choose the output folder and click Convert! The amount of time it takes to convert will depend on what files type you are converting to and the speed of your computer’s processor. Make sure you have enough free space on the destination drive before converting.

GOM player is a very useful audio and video media player that has many of the most popular codecs built into it. GOM Player includes many codecs (XviD, DivX, FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, H263 and more) so you can watch most videos without having to install separate codecs. GOM Player can also play broken AVI files or AVI files that have not been completely downloaded yet. So if you have an AVI file that you could only download a portion of, GOM player will allow you to view the downloaded part. Also, GOM player not only supports subtitles, but you can actually customize the margin, location, size, resolution, and font on the subtitles.

Another cool feature of GOM player is that it has a built in screen capture utilitythat you can use to capture still images of the video that you’re currently playing. There are also a couple of other programs that out there that let you do the same thing, but GOM player is cooler because it includes a Burst Capture feature that let’s you take continuous screenshots upto 999 still images!

Once you have downloaded and installed GOM media player, you can capture frames of a video by clicking on the Control Panel icon at the bottom right (it’s the middle icon out of the three).

You can either click on Screen Capture to begin a capture with the default settings or you can click on Advanced Capture and configure them as you desire.

You can configure the destination directory for the still images, the image format (JPEG or BMP), the quality of the JPEG, the burst capture images (number of images you want to capture), and the but interval in seconds. You can also quickly set the current screen as you Windows background.

If you find that the video is a little too dark or too light, you can adjust the brightness and contrast before capturing your images.

GOM Player is an excellent media player with some really useful advanced features. Definitely worth checking out if you’re sick of the default DVD playing software that you get on your computer after buying it. VLC 1.0 media player

VLC has just came out from beta to its first major version. Codenamed Goldeneye, version 1.0 is much worth checking out than the earlier beta versions.

The new release has more features like more responsive controls, frame-by-frame playback, on-the-fly recording for all media, and support for a wider range of codecs, decoders, encoders, and demuxers. I was also able to play Real (rmvb) format using this player!

Another cool feature of VLC is its capability to stream media. This means you can create your own http service from your own computer and share the URL to others.

Of course you will need to have the bandwidth for this so if you only have a dial-up connection – forget about streaming from your computer! If you have a LAN then this should be OK for a LANcast where the http stream is fast.

Since VLC is known to be able to handle streaming video then it is natural to assume that you can use this player to play URLs with streaming content. You may test this functionality by pasting the URL on the Open Dialog window of VLC under the network tab:

In the example above I entered a Youtube URL and it was able to play it like a normal media file.

You can also use the Convert button to save a converted file of this streamed movie:

Here is a psychedelic VLC trick. I call it the endless desktop show. VLC has the capability to capture your desktop so it can stream it to the Network.

Somehow it seems to be on an infinite loop and if you don’t minimize VLC it will capture your desktop inside VLC endlessly. You will end up with something like below:

First click the Media Menu then choose Open Media. Under the capture device tab choose desktop as the capture mode:

Click the Play button and you should see the endless desktop movie like I have above.

There are too many passwords to remember these days – system login passwords, email account passwords, bank accounts password, social bookmarking passwords and more. If you understand the risks, writing all those passwords in a piece of paper is not a very brilliant decision to solve this.

Password protect programs and EXE files with Empathy

So why would you ever want to password protect a program?

Well, for lots of reasons! For example, maybe you have TurboTax installed on your computer, which does not have any built-in security, and you have other people who might use that computer. You certainly don’t want someone to be able to open TurboTax and see all of your financial information right!?

Currently, the only way to prevent someone from accessing that program would be to create another user account and secure your account with a password. However, there are always times when you just happen to forget to log off your account and someone comes along and sits down to use the computer.

Empathy is a cool program that allows you to password protect Windows programs and EXE files. It can modify any EXE file so that it will require the user to enter a password before it can be run. This is fabulous for someone like me.

Now I can password protect my FTP program, my financial programs, my chatapplications, etc to add additional security on top of passwords and prevent other people from accessing my data and sensitive software.

The other cool thing about the program is that if you copy or move the EXE file to another location or even to another computer, the password will still be required, even if the operating system is different! Now that’s pretty cool!

This is also a great utility for portable apps that you might have on your USB drive. Sometimes you end up having to let someone borrow your USB stick, which means your data could be accessed, even if you have passwords setup. Using Empathy, you can password protect your portable apss also in case you have to lend out or you end up losing your USB stick.

The protected files can be run on Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, and Windows Vista.

The only strange thing about the program is that when you download the program from his website, the unregistered version only allows you to use one letter to password protect a file.

How to reveal a password hidden by asterisks

I just got a new computer and was re-installing all of my apps like FileZilla and WinSCP, etc, which are used to connect via FTP to some of my web sites. However, I could not remember my FTP passwords for the life of me and I didn’t have to because they were all nicely saved in the the FTP programs!

Unfortunately, the passwords were all hidden by asterisks and there was no way for me to transfer the passwords to the new computer. Then I found out that there is a way to reveal passwords that hidden by asterisks easily using a program from NirSoft.

These guys are great because they have already written several cool programs that I have written about before like ProduKey, which can be used to view the product keys for Office, etc, and Mail PassView, which can be used to recover passwords for Outlook, Eudora and Thunderbird, and MessenPass, which can be used to recoverr passwords for IM programs like MSN Messenger, Google Talk and AIM.

AsteriskLogger is another fabulous program from them that will reveal any password from a program that uses asterisks automatically.

This program has some nice features that make it better than any other password revealer:

No need to press a button to reveal a password. Simply open the program or window that has the asterisks and the password will be revealed inside the password box itself!
In the main window, Asterisk Logger will display more information about the revealed password such as the date and time the password was revealed, the name of the application, and the executable file .
You can save the passwords to an HTML file or to a text file also.

It works on Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. It even works on Windows NT, but you have to download some file called psapi.dll and put it in your System32 directory. Even without the file, you can still reveal passwords, it just won’t show additional info.

There are some places where you will not be able to see passwords because they don’t store the passwords behind the asterisks for extra security, including Netscape 6.X, dialup and network passwords in Windows, and Windows usermanagement tools. It will also not work for passwords stored in Internet Explorer.

Overall, it worked wonderfully for me since my FTP programs stored the passwords behind the asterisks and I was able to recover all of my FTP passwords. It’s also useful if you have VNC programs and for some email programs like Outlook Express and IncrediMail. Enjoy!

Recover and hack Yahoo and MSN instant messenger passwords

Instant messenger password recovery tools are really necessary for someone like me who has to use 5 different instant messenger applications to talk to family, friends, co-workers, etc. However, with all of those messengers, I end up forgetting my password on a few of them some times. Of course, you could have the same password for each one, but I’m in IT and and I’ll about multiple passwords for security reasons.

Either way, you can use a nifty little program from NirSoft called MessenPass that you can use to recovery Instant Messenger passwords. Another program I had written about earlier from NirSoft helped those who needed to recover passwords for email clients such as Outlook or Gmail called Mail PassView.

MessenPass works in the same way as Mail PassView by revealing your password and username. It supports many Instant Messenger applications, including

MSN Messenger
Windows Live Messenger
Yahoo Messenger
Google Talk
ICQ Lite
AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)
Trillian
Miranda
GAIM/Pidgin

The program can only be use to recover the passwords for the current logged in user on the local computer. Also, it only works if you have chosen to remember the password in any of the above mentioned programs. It can’t reveal the passwords if you do not have it saved.

Another program that you can use to recover MSN Messenger, Windows Live and Windows Messenger passwords is MSN Password Recovery. Again, however, this program requires that the password already be saved where you can you log on automatically.

Another good program for recovering instant messenger passwords is Advanced Instant Messengers Password Recovery. It will try to decrypt any passwords that might be stored on your computer.

How to recover a lost PST password

There are a few tools out there that you can use to try and retrieve a lost PST password, one of which I have written about before called Mail Pass View, a free utility to recover lost email passwords.

If Mail Pass View does not work for you, another free program you can try isPSTPassword. You can use this program to recover PST passwords for Outlook 2000, XP, 2003, and 2007!
The cool thing is that you don’t even need Office in order to recovery the PST password, only the PST file itself. Just choose your PST file and it will give you several passwords that you can use to open it!

That’s what is really cool about this program, you don’t even need the original password to open a PST file. The way the that Microsoft Outlook stores the password is what makes it easier to hack.
Basically, instead of storing the original password in an encrypted form, which would be harder to break, Outlook stores a 32-bit hash value that represents the original password.
However, this hash value can be generated using many different combinations of letters and numbers. For example, if you set a password to “1234”, the file can be opened using these passwords also: “hkNkwC” and “YUWqKD”. Go ahead and give it a shot if you think this is fake.
Note that the program will automatically find any PST files stored in the current user profile under

Document and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

If you want a different PST file, just drag it into the window or press F7 to browse for the file.
This is the only program out there that I know that is free! All other PST password crackers are commercial software packages. If neither of these two programs work, you might have to end up buying something, but hopefully not! Enjoy!
